Me too! I think my high school French teacher would probably pass out from shock if he knew that I have subsequently learned three other languages and have recently started taking French lessons again

Interestingly enough, I was quite run of the mill in languages at school. Later on, this skill of mine really boosted because of my “multicultural life”

Great post Evelyn and a good lead into our conversation on Friday.
I also found myself coming out of my shell socially thanks to a series of very welcoming expat spousal groups, which is why I feel so strongly about their role.

Lesley, thanks for posting my article on your FB page. Your group sounds like a fantastic idea – groups of people with shared circumstances are a great source of support. Nice to see someone who has relocated many times setting up a business to help others relocate – it makes the process so much more pleasant when the relocation consultant has personal experience and can understand the things that are really important.

Judy, thanks as always for your input. You are right – books are a great source of information and support! The two are expat classics and more and more books are being written by expats for expats every year. My library of “expat lit” is growing exponentially. Non fiction is always good but an expat novel like Jo Parfitt’s Sunshine Soup can also help you to realise that those experiences that feel so idiosyncratic at the start are all part and parcel of the “normal” expat experience.

FIGT is a great resource and I’m very glad that your work there led you to my blog

I would add books as a source of support. When I returned home to Canada, I read Robin Pascoe’s book “Homeward Bound” which I found very helpful, and then I also read David Pollock & Ruth Van Reken’s “Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds” and had some real “lightbulb” moments about my TCK husband and son, as well as finding many passages which were relevant to me as a Third Culture Adult.

Volunteering with Families in Global Transition also brought me into contact with a whole community which I never knew existed. Finding articles to post online for them caused me to read much more widely. It was how I came across you and your blog, Evelyn.
